VOLUNTEERS from the Lismore SES Unit have trained a group of teenagers in disaster response and emergency preparedness as part of its Youth Internship Program.

The group of 15 and 16 year-olds have been recognised for completing the 10-week program which included first aid training, boat work, knot tying, navigation skills and learning how to use new disaster apps.

It also gave participants an understanding of natural disasters and emergency preparedness, which included night training on boats in the river.

The teenagers can now become fulltime members of the SES unit or transfer the skills into other volunteer and emergency support services.

“The SES is built on people just like them, individuals who generously give their time, energy, and compassion to help strengthen and protect our communities,” a Lismore SES spokesperson said.

“A sincere thank you to the parents and guardians for your ongoing support, to the volunteers who made this internship possible.”

Lismore MP Janelle Saffin and representatives from other emergency services spoke at the SES unit as part of the final ceremony.

Some of the previous graduates have gone on to be part of SES units once they finish high school, while others have returned to the army cadets and other community groups with enhanced skills.

NSW SES program support officer Nikki Ristoski said the program provides transferable skills which helps people work under pressure.

“It gives a sense of purpose and community spirit,” she said.

“We give students an insight into the various pathways within emergency services and have other agencies such as NSW Police, NSW Ambulance and Fire and Rescue NSW involved as well.”

Lismore SES is now seeking volunteers to fill critical support roles in intel, planning, logistics and community engagement.
