THE New South Wales Member for Lismore, Janelle Saffin, has shared a Transport for NSW update on the progress of removing rail bridges in Lismore in response to ongoing community inquiries.

In a briefing statement, Transport for NSW stated that it was continuing to monitor the current road arrangements at Alexandra Parade in North Lismore.

“Transport has been working with Lismore City Council to develop proposals for a permanent detour route around Alexandra Parade, past the Lismore Showground and across the disused rail corridor,” the briefing paper stated.

“This would allow the road under Alexandra Parade to be closed in the short term prior to obtaining agreement from Heritage Council to remove the structure over the road.”

With the cost estimate from the council for constructing the detour significantly higher than Transport for NSW had initially estimated, the department is now reconsidering the option.

The Heritage Council of NSW has granted an extension until June 30 regarding the Terania Street bridge, which requires a curtilage amendment request, including an updated heritage assessment for the remaining Lismore rail bridges.

Transport for NSW’s existing proposal to amend the heritage curtilage is to exclude both Alexandra Parade and Union Street bridges from the overall State Heritage Register listing.
