NOMINATIONS are open for the Tweed Sustainability Awards, recognising local champions working to protect the environment and promote sustainable living.

The biennial awards began in 2019 and have since honoured individuals, businesses and community groups making a difference across the Tweed.

Tweed Council sustainability education officer Jane Moad said the awards were an opportunity to showcase achievements and inspire others.

“We know people want to make environmentally friendly choices when they buy – this is a great way for people to find out more about eco-friendly businesses in the Tweed,” Moad said.

The new Urban Rewilding category acknowledges efforts to restore native backyards to provide cooling and habitat and biodiversity benefits in urban areas.

“Our recent Climate Action Cafes highlighted the community’s desire to get involved in creating biodiverse habitats in their own backyards and urban environments,” Moad said.

“This new award recognises individuals, groups or families who are going above and beyond to create climate resilient and wildlife-friendly spaces.”

Winners can choose from six prize options, which include a professional photography package, a bike and picnic package, a nursery voucher, an eco-cruise voucher, and either a farm health assessment or a home energy assessment.

Previous award winners include Stokers Siding Public School, Summerland Bank, Woodland Valley Farm, Murwillumbah Farmers Market, Fingal Head Coastcare and Beverley Fairley.

Nominations close at midnight on Sunday, July 20. People’s Choice voting is open from August 11 to September 14, and winners will be announced at an awards celebration on Wednesday, October 15.
