HUNDREDS of people are expected to take part in the first March in March for Forests protest to be held in Byron Bay on Sunday March 23.
Participants will gather at 10am and walk from Railway Park to Main Beach for a rally at Denning Park, with live music and speakers.
The event is part of a nationwide movement to end forest logging across Australia in the lead-up to the Federal election.
Northern Rivers march coordinator Valerie Thompson, from the Bob Brown Foundation, said it was a great opportunity for people to come together to stand up for our forests.
“It gives those of us still cleaning up from the most recent climate event a wonderful day out at the seaside with like-minded community who care about the environment and want to see the government take real action on climate, saving forests and protecting endangered species,” she said.
“It lifts the spirit to do something to protect what we love, and connect with people who feel the same way.
“The last rally for forests in this region in Mullumbimby in November attracted 700 people, so people really care.”
Speakers will include Federal Greens candidate Mandy Nolan, Southern Cross University dean of law David Heilpern, Indigenous cultural facilitator Jarmbi, environmental author Anastasia Guise and North East Forest Alliance president Dailan Pugh.
Indigenous singer-songwriter Nidala, Olivia Rosebery, Aine Tyrrel, The Seeding, DANU and The Big Little Town Choir will also perform at the event.
