TWEED Shire Council is hosting a Splash, Movie ‘n’ DJ night on Friday, November 22 at the Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre in Murwillumbah to understand better what young people need and want.

The Council is seeking feedback from young people in the Tweed to improve outdoor recreation facilities across the shire.

Participants aged between 12 and 24 who complete a survey will receive free tickets to the event

The proposed Youth Outdoor Recreation Action Plan was created from a 2020 consultation with 550 young people using surveys and co-design workshops to brainstorm ideas for new outdoor youth spaces, facilities and activities in the Tweed.

Tweed Shire Council’s parks and active communities manager Murray Smith said the ideas contributed by young people about their vision for the Tweed have been incorporated into a new plan.

“We’ve used these ideas to create the Youth Outdoor Recreation Action Plan, and we’re eager to hear feedback from young people so we can begin moving forward with these projects,” Mr Smith said.

“The action plan will help us build recreational facilities that meet the needs of Tweed youth both today and into the future.

“Council is inviting both young people and the broader community to review the action plan and complete the survey.

“This will ensure we deliver a plan the community wants.”

The proposed plan builds on the extensive community engagement conducted to develop the Council’s Open Space Strategy 2019–2029 with children, youth and the broader community.

The plan highlights four key areas for improvement across the Tweed: youth-friendly spaces, skateboarding and scooter areas, and bike facilities, including an urban bike park, pump track, BMX track, and outdoor events and activities.

The proposed Youth Outdoor Recreation Action Plan is on public exhibition until Wednesday, November 27 2024.
