Aboriginal Knockout Carnival returns

ONE of the most popular cultural and sporting events on the Northern Rivers calendar, the Lismore Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout Carnival, returns September 20-22.

The qualifier leads to the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout Carnival in October and allows Aboriginal rugby league clubs and players to train and prepare for the main event.

The Northern United Rugby League Football Club Incorporated, known as the Dirawongs, has hosted the Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout Carnival across the Northern Rivers and the state since 2006.

As one of Australia’s most significant Indigenous gatherings, the carnival was created as a more accessible alternative for Indigenous players. The first knockout was held at Camdenville Oval, St Peters, in 1971, with eight participating teams. The winning teams take the crown and the right to host the next knockout.

Each year, many teams, players, and supporters meet with families and friends from other communities across the Far North Coast region of NSW. The event celebrates a widely shared love for the game and the diverse Indigenous cultures that make up the larger community.

The carnival runs from 9 am to 5 pm on all three days at Oakes Oval.
