THE Byron Bay Cycling Club (BBCC) has announced a packed calendar of cycling events, starting this Sunday, July 28, with a winter criterium series race at 8:00 am at the Cavanbah Centre.

BBCC secretary Mat Johnson said anyone can attend and the club has a focus on new riders, particularly females and juniors.

“People will be graded and race in their grades,” Mr Johnson said.

Following the winter criterium, the club will host an interclub series between Byron Bay, Yamba, and Grafton.

Grafton will hold a road race on August 3, followed by a criterium in Byron Bay on August 25, and an individual time trial in Yamba on September 14.

“That will decide the overall champion riders for each grade and also the champion club,” Mr Johnson said.

The series will conclude with a team time trial on September 15 in Yamba.

The Lismore Cycling Festival is also on the calendar, scheduled for the Labour Day long weekend from October 5-6.

Hosted by the Byron Bay Cycling Club, the festival will feature a criterium in Lismore around Oakes Oval on October 5.

Sunday morning will see the Grand Fondo with two ride lengths available.

“The first one is called the ‘Flatlands Route,’ which is a pretty easy ride, not too much climbing at all,” Mr Johnson said.

“It’s 28 kilometres and pitched at first-timers.”

“The longer distance ride is about 110 kilometres and has a number of challenging climbs.”

“It’s a challenging ride which we are calling the Rainbow Macca Chase.”

Mr Johnson said cycling enthusiasts of all levels are encouraged to participate and enjoy the variety of events planned for the coming months.
