THE invitation window has closed for the 2024 Byron Bay Surf Festival, with all remaining slots now open to the public.

The event, running from August 15 to 18, will feature renowned participants including McTavish Surfboards surfing legend Bob McTavish, and Varuna Surfboards’ Damien Cole.

The festival will kick off on August 16 with the SurfAid Women’s Cup, which has already sold out.

On August 17, the Wategos Wizards event will feature the Old Mal division, where surfers compete on pre-1968 boards over 9 feet long, and the Junior Logger divisions for boys and girls under 18.

The Freestyle & Stoke event on August 18 will include the Varuna Seed to Surf wooden surfboard showcase and the Dr. Bronners Party Wave, where the first to the beach wins $500.

The McTavish Trim, showcasing top longboarders on August 18 has also sold out.

This invitational event features the top nine male and female longboarders competing in a “furthest wave ridden” format. The Team Challenge, a tag-team event with a $500 prize, requires each team to include at least one female or U18 junior surfer.

This year’s Byron Bay Surf Festival theme, “rewildering,” aims to reconnect participants with nature and promote environmental stewardship.

The festival includes surf competitions, workshops, talks, art installations, film screenings, live music, and parties. Special guests will include surfers, environmental experts, and artists.
