NORTHERN Rivers croquet clubs have cemented the region as a NSW State Championship hotspot, hosting 28 players for the fifth year in a row.

Ballina Cherry Street Croquet Club hosted the NSW Golf Croquet Division 2 Doubles and joined Byron Bay and Lismore clubs to run the singles events over five busy days.

The Northern Rivers has state representative players who helped run and compete in the tournament.

“It’s the fifth consecutive year that NSW Croquet have allocated state championships to the Northern Rivers, which is great for anyone who plays locally,” tournament manager David Scott said.

“The combination of the area itself and how we’re able to collaborate with the other clubs puts us in good stead to host these events.

“We’ve got blue shirts everywhere from our club and it’s all hands on deck once it gets going.”

Golf croquet is one of the most popular disciplines.

Known as a more social version of the game, it combines strategy with time on the lawn and attracts fans of chess and snooker.

Early coaching helps newcomers develop the precision and foresight needed to play competitively.

“Doubles is a good way to play the game; most people back up for the singles too,” Scott said.

“We’ve had a few ladies from Queensland and some from Sydney, so it’s a nice little boost to the economy with most of the field coming from outside the area.”

Jan and Keith Brodie, from Coutts Crossing near Grafton, travel the state for tournaments and hope to grow the sport by attracting younger players.

“The clubs will usually train you up for free and provide the equipment you need to get started,” Mr Brodie said.
