Hundreds of people flock to the sports fields for masters games
It was a hive of activity at Weston Park in Goonellabah with 18 teams contesting the Football 11-a-side competition.
About 1200 people were part of the event which is one of the biggest of its kind in a regional area.
“We had about 285 competitors with more women’s teams in the end,” football convenor Jeff Wingfield said.
“Football is popular in the area; there are more than 7000 people that play locally now so we’re always growing.
“It’s a great event; I’m 60 and still fill in and play in teams if I’m needed throughout the weekend.
“There are always a few old-age injuries, but nothing too serious, If I don’t play it doesn’t worry me either.
“The whole idea is to have a bit of fun and bring some money into the region.”
The 2025 program featured eight other sports, including netball, softball, bowls, Oztag, cricket, baseball, golf and hockey.
Netball drew the biggest numbers with 26 teams registered with many participants coming from local a-grade competitions.
Lismore Workers Club held an official welcome party for the first time since 2019.
The event had been plagued by the pandemic and floods in recent years before returning to form this year with three days of competition and social activities.
It also coincided with the Lismore Cup this year which created extra buzz for the entertainment program.
“The event boosts community morale, promotes healthy living, and strengthens social connections across the region,” Lismore City Council events lead Gavin McKean said.
“People are just excited to be back doing what they love, surrounded by old friends and new faces.”
