Murwillumbah regatta first in five years

MURWILLUMBAH Rowing Club (MLC) will host the first regatta in the region since 2019 on Sunday, November 17.

In partnership with Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Rowing Club, The Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads Regatta will run one- and two-kilometre races in all boat classes.

Events will include juniors, seniors and masters with men’s, as well as women’s and mixed crews.

The course runs from just above Condong Bridge for the 2000-metre start to finish at the MLC.

Murwillumbah Rowing Club president Robert Gee said the club was excited about the event.

“This event will be the first Northern Rivers Rowing Association regatta in Murwillumbah since pre-COVID and the floods,” Gee said.

“It may have been a long time, but we are really looking forward to having a full day of racing with all boat classes from single sculls to eights invited to race.

“We are hoping for entries from clubs across all the Northern Rivers and southeast Queensland, and with fine weather and low winds, there should be some terrific racing on our six-lane course.”

The MLC was founded in 1902 as the Tweed River Rowing Club and, in 1976, was re-established as Murwillumbah Rowing Club after many years of challenges, including severe floods.

The new purpose-built clubhouse was completed for the 1999/2000 season and became the training course for the Sydney Olympics rowing team.

Novice masters events have been added to the regatta to promote single sculling among those who have come to rowing later and might never have won a sculling race.

Northern Rivers Rowing Association points will apply, as well as age handicaps as per other masters events.
