“This is as serious as it gets”: Ezra Mam’s future at the broncos in doubt

DISCUSSIONS have raged around the appropriate punishment for Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam after his involvement in a two-car crash on Friday afternoon.

The star allegedly failed a roadside drug test and was allegedly driving while unlicensed.

Mam’s vehicle collided with an Uber carrying three passengers, who avoided serious injury.

“I reckon it looks something like this: eight weeks suspension from the NRL, $100,000 fine, $50,000 of that suspended and all sorts of community involvement attached with that,” Jimmy Smith said on SEN 1170 Afternoons.

“Does that feel like enough?

“He is so fortunate that no one was more seriously hurt or indeed killed in this accident, including himself but most particularly the three people in the Uber.”

Smith explained the severity of the situation, and is expecting to see the NRL hand down a heavy punishment that could include a suspension or even release from the club, if Mam is found guilty of all charges.

“This is as serious as it gets and the NRL integrity unit will be watching very closely,” he said.

“The Broncos will have the opportunity to hand down a punishment first. The NRL integrity unit will then look at it, deem whether it’s appropriate or not and move forward from that.”

The incident comes after a string of issues for the Broncos in 2024.

They had a disappointing season that resulted in the firing of coach Kevin Walters and the hiring of Michael Maguire – events that drew much disapproval from Broncos old boys.

Smith expects Mam’s actions will have a lasting impact on the team, with questions of lineup and reputation in the air.

“This is incredibly serious and has the potential to derail the Brisbane Broncos for months to come,” he said.
