Triathletes target long course race at Tweed Enduro
TRIATHLETES who have the determination and grit for long course racing can take part in the annual Tweed Enduro.
The event comprises a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run at Pottsville on Saturday, February 8.
It is a flat course; however, the event is often the first or only time during the year where a lot of competitors attempt the longer distance.
Top performers qualify for the World Triathlon Championships at Wollongong later in the year.
There is also sprint distance and age divisions events with about 1000 competitors expected across the day.
The sprint distance is popular with a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.
There is also an aquabike section which eliminates the run in the summer heat.
It comprises a longer distance 1900m and 90km cycle and the standard 1500m swim and 40km ride.
People can enter the event as a relay team of three, which is popular among members of local gyms and triathlon clubs.
The first timers section allows competitors the chance to use flippers in the swim.
There are cash prizes for the top three finishers while all entries in the long course events will receive a free triathlon bag.
The open men and women’s champions usually complete the enduro in just over four hours.
Professional triathlete Edward Vining was dominant in the race last year, clocking a time of three hours, 47 minutes and 26 seconds.
Since its inception in 2015, the event has injected millions into the Tweed economy.
It aims to support community groups like the Cabarita Surf Life Saving Club, Pottsville Beach Neighbourhood Centre, Murwillumbah Venturer Scouts and the local men’s shed.
It also supports sporting clubs including the Tweed Coast Raiders junior rugby league and Pottsville Cricket Club with the aim to raise another $7000 this year.
Entries are encouraged to be made as soon as possible to avoid the waiting list.
The event was full last year while the recent Kingscliff triathlon in December was also fully booked.
Entries for the Tweed Enduro and the next Kingscliff event in March can be made at nxsports.org.
