{"id":100559,"date":"2024-07-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-21T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=100559"},"modified":"2024-07-17T18:58:36","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T08:58:36","slug":"new-tweed-30-race-joins-paddle-marathon-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/sport\/new-tweed-30-race-joins-paddle-marathon-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"New Tweed 30 race joins paddle marathon championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE INAUGURAL Tweed 30 Marathon paddle event hits the scenic Tweed River on Sunday, July 31.<\/p>\n<p>The race starts at the Murwillumbah Rowing Club and finishes at the Jack Evans Boat Harbour at the mouth of the Tweed River.<\/p>\n<p>The event is the longest of the Pacific Coast Marathon Championships at 30 km, and participants can also form teams to compete in 10-11 km stages.<\/p>\n<p>Event manager and treasurer for the event host Currumbin Creek Paddle Club Grant Epple said that it had been in planning for some time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/07\/449438128_5060537184_50235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Starting at the Murwillumbah Rowing Club. Photo: TONY BROWN.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Tweed River is an underutilised waterway for paddlers, and we do hold annual figure eight race events at Chinderah each October,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope to develop the Tweed 30 as an annual signature endurance event for more experienced paddlers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For serious paddlers, the race will provide a challenging lead-up to endurance paddling events, the Vaikobi 14 Beaches Ocean Race and Paddle Australia Canoe Ocean Racing Championships on August 3.<\/p>\n<p>On a run-out tide, the downstream paddle will travel past some of the Tweed&#8217;s most stunning river scenery and the areas picturesque riverside towns.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/07\/449481827_5060543051_50215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"339\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heading east along the river past Condong. Photo: MIKE GOUT.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For spectators cheering on, a coffee van is available at the Murwillumbah starting point, and complimentary food and drinks will be offered at the Tweed Heads finish.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers hope that the race becomes a permanent fixture of the marathon series.<\/p>\n<p>The course is unique in offering elite paddlers an opportunity for a longer paddle as well as allowing the less experienced athletes to form a relay team with changeovers at Tumbulgum and Chinderah.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/07\/449604962_5060541551_50254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy paddlers. Photo: TONY BROWN.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stage one runs from the Murwillumbah Rowing Club to Tumbulgum, stage two is from Tumbulgum to Chinderah, and the final, third leg is from Chinderah to Jack Evans Boat Harbour.<\/p>\n<p>Check-in for single, double, and relay entrants will be from 7 am to 8 am.<\/p>\n<p>The SUP race starts at 8.30 am with the mass start at 9 am.
