TWEED Shire Council is holding a community tree planting for Planet Ark’s National Tree Day on Sunday, July 28, in Banora Point as part of its Cool Towns Urban Forest Program.<\/p>\n

The initiative will plant 700 trees in the reserve area next to the walking path accessible from Greenway Drive.<\/p>\n

The critical natural site is adjacent to urban environments and stormwater canals. Tree regeneration aims to help reduce weed growth in the Melaleuca forest, provide habitat for local wildlife, and develop shade for walking and recreational activities.<\/p>\n

Approximately 300,000 Australians converge nationwide on National Tree Day each year to plant trees, connect with nature, and learn more about their local environment.<\/p>\n

Participants are expected to come from the local area and further afield. Holes will be pre-dug, and volunteers will plant and mulch the trees. Organisers will provide tools and equipment for planting.<\/p>\n

Hand tools and buckets for watering are requested. Gardening gloves and closed shoes are required. The council is reminding planters to remember sun safety and wear a hat, sunscreen, and sun-smart clothing.<\/p>\n

The Tweed Council is committed to making the day enjoyable and community-friendly, with family activities and a sausage sizzle during the event, making for a perfect family day out.<\/p>\n

To volunteer, community members are required to register on-site for safety and insurance purposes. The tree planting will take place from 8am to 11am on the northern side of the stormwater canal adjacent to Avondale Drive in Banora Point. The public can access the planting location via Greenaway Drive, opposite the Tweed Coolangatta Junior AFL oval.<\/p>\n
