NEW upgrades at Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre, including a new weighbridge, will make it easier and safer for Tweed residents to dispose of waste.<\/p>\n

The $10.5 million works involved the construction of the last waste cell at the site, significant upgrades at the site entrance, and a new state-of-the-art weighbridge.<\/p>\n

Additional parking has been added, and a separate entrance and building extension have been added for the tip shop, Tweed JUNKtion.<\/p>\n

New road infrastructure uses recycled road-building materials, and new amenities include a new site office, a designated education room, and an administration office.<\/p>\n

Council’s director of sustainable communities and environment, Naomi Searle, said it was exciting to see the master plan coming to fruition with the various stages taking shape.<\/p>\n

“With the Tweed’s expanding population and evolving community needs, as well as government requirements, we needed waste solutions that could accommodate growth,” Searle said.<\/p>\n

“These solutions also helped us recognise the resources in materials previously sent to landfill as we work together to reduce our impact on the natural environment.<\/p>\n

“Our main considerations were cost and functionality, regulatory requirements, customer experience and meeting rapid changes in an environment where waste is seen as a resource rather than something we discard. We’re making waste disposal easier and safer for our residents while advancing towards our zero-waste ambition.”<\/p>\n

The next $20 million stage is underway, with design works nearing completion on a new transfer station and stormwater and leachate infrastructure. A contract has been awarded for the construction of the internal road to the new landfill, which will be completed over the next two years.<\/p>\n
