{"id":102977,"date":"2024-09-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-22T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=102977"},"modified":"2024-09-18T22:28:44","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T12:28:44","slug":"former-feros-village-filling-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/news\/former-feros-village-filling-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Feros Village filling up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE operator of the former Feros Village in Byron Bay is working with local homelessness organisations such as Fletcher Street Cottage and Mullumbimby Neighbourhood Centre to fill the remaining places at the aged care facility.<\/p>\n<p>Non-profit organisation St Andrew&#8217;s, which operates another aged care facility in Ballina, took over operation of the Marvell Street site in January on an interim licence after it was selected as the preferred proponent to negotiate a lease following a public expression of interest (EOI) process.<\/p>\n<p>The EOI was initiated by the NSW Government after former operator Feros Care announced in February 2023 that it planned to close the facility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/09\/ATVroomatStAndrewsV_76986.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Government awarded St Andrew&#8217;s a 40-year lease last week, providing security for residents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to look at what we can do differently in Byron Bay than what we do in Ballina,&#8221; St Andrew&#8217;s chief executive officer Todd Yourell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We looked at the homelessness statistics in Byron Bay and really aimed for homelessness status with the Department of Health and Aged Care, which we have now received.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That means that more than half of the residents have to have experienced homelessness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102984\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-102984\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/09\/TheentrancetoClarkes_78702-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/09\/TheentrancetoClarkes_78702-1-rotated.jpg 900w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/09\/TheentrancetoClarkes_78702-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/09\/TheentrancetoClarkes_78702-1-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sign for Clarkes Cottage at St Andrew&#8217;s Village in Byron Bay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the site has capacity for 40 people, there were only seven residents left at the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>But St Andrew&#8217;s has built numbers back up to 30 as it works on refurbishing the buildings.<\/p>\n<p>More than $2 million has been spent so far on repainting, replacing floors, renovating kitchenettes, adding skylights, replacing beds and other furniture, updating the salon, adding artwork, landscaping and replacing lattice with more durable aluminium slats.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Yourell said the next step is to seek a grant to renovate the bathrooms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/09\/Thenew-looksalonatSt_79720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new-look hair salon at St Andrew&#8217;s Village Byron Bay.
