{"id":105547,"date":"2024-12-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=105547"},"modified":"2024-12-04T18:56:09","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T07:56:09","slug":"tis-the-season-to-give","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/news\/tis-the-season-to-give\/","title":{"rendered":"Tis the season to give"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MULLUMBIMBY District Neighbourhood Centre is appealing for donations to help people in need this Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>The items it is seeking include unwrapped toys, in date canned and\/or festive food, table decorations, soft drinks, desserts, wrapping paper, a surprise unwrapped gift for an adult or child (any gender), and gift cards.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre gifted 347 hampers last Christmas and targeted early intervention manager Kate Tweedie said she is expecting it will be a similar number this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Last year we still very much had that feeling of a community in recovery,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This year people still aren&#8217;t quite there and the cost-of-living is really coming into play these days as well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/12\/ToysdonatedtoMullumb_96627.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toys donated to Mullumbimby District Neighbourhood Centre for Christmas. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel for families doing it tough around Christmas time because there&#8217;s so much emphasis on family and joy and if you&#8217;re already struggling it can make it that little bit more depressing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Tweedie said donations of gift cards are strongly encouraged because they allow the dignity of choice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are especially handy for older kids,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The age group for toys tends to be eight and under.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Tweedie said the community response had been fantastic.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/12\/Christmaspresentslin_97985.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"512\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christmas presents lined up at Mullumbimby District Neighbourhood Centre. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a few partners who reach out and donate every year, including one of the classes at Shearwater, The Mullumbimby Steiner School,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I love it because it&#8217;s getting kids involved and teaching them about giving back to the community from a young age.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Amrita Pantry Byron Bay and the Anglican Church also donate and Ray White Byron Bay reached out to us this year and they&#8217;re doing a drive on gift cards. It&#8217;s great because they can reach a different audience than we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Donations can be dropped off at the Gulganii Community Pantry at 3 Bridgeland Lane, between Mullumbimby Hire &amp; Sales and Kiva Spa, until December 16.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MULLUMBIMBY District Neighbourhood Centre is appealing for donations to help people in need this Christmas.
