Neurodivergent artist Sarah Lewis will lead a full-day superhero costume-making workshop at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery’s Ignite Studios this Sunday, December 8.<\/p>\n

Participants will have the opportunity to design their own costume, including headpieces and belts that showcase their unique superpower.<\/p>\n

The workshop coincides with the final weekend of the Suburban Superheroes exhibition by not-for-profit community organisation Sprung Dance Theatre, which creates new contemporary work and provides critical opportunities for artists with disability in the Northern Rivers region.<\/p>\n

Lewis is a Queensland-based interdisciplinary artist whose work includes installations, performance, music, digital media, costume creation and community programs.<\/p>\n

“We will be working with craft foam and base templates to build our own Supers,” Lewis said. “I want to encourage people to let their weird out \u2014 weirdness is power!”<\/p>\n

Housed in the heritage-listed old Council Chambers and former Ballina Fire Station, Northern Rivers Community Gallery & Ignite Studios is owned and operated by Ballina Shire Council.<\/p>\n

The Gallery will also host an artist-led tour of the Suburban Heroes exhibition at 10am tomorrow (Saturday, December 7), followed by an artist talk at 11am.<\/p>\n

The costume-making workshop runs from 10am to 3pm on Sunday December 8 and tickets cost $35.<\/p>\n

The inclusive workshop is open to everyone, but children under 16 must be accompanied by a ticketed adult and bookings are required in advance.<\/p>\n
