This includes $600 million allocated to essential maintenance aimed at improving schools for students and staff alike.<\/p>\n<p>Among the standout projects, Lismore Heights Public School received a $3 million upgrade to create a purpose-built special education learning unit.<\/p>\n<p>Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin said the upgrades would transform learning opportunities for students with additional needs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/01\/image00001_19351.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Assistant principal Lauren Battese and principal Mark Scotton; member for Lismore Janelle Saffin and director of educational leadership for the Lismore Network, Nickie Bartlett. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This creates a purpose-built special learning area, and that&#8217;s really important not only for the children but for their teachers and their support teachers,&#8221; Saffin said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve done a wonderful job here for a long time with what they had.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But now they&#8217;ll have a sensory room. They&#8217;ll have a proper bathroom. They&#8217;ll have breakout areas.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll have bigger rooms, all sorts of things that they weren&#8217;t able to have before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Principal Mark Scotton said the upgrades reflect the school community&#8217;s commitment to supporting students with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The facilities that we had didn&#8217;t really cater for the broad range of needs that we have for the students at our school,&#8221; Scotton said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/01\/image00006_19385.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Director of educational leadership for the Lismore Network, Nickie Bartlett; member for Lismore Janelle Saffin; and principal Mark Scotton. So we now have a support unit which consists of three classes, and that was an additional class that we put in about two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a strong commitment as a community\u2014both students, staff, and parents\u2014towards supporting students with additional needs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And this is really about making sure that we&#8217;ve got equal access to learning for students with disabilities in line with that for students without.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said these maintenance projects, while unassuming, were essential for keeping schools safe and functional.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/01\/image00007_19398.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin and principal Mark Scotton.
