{"id":107303,"date":"2025-01-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-26T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=107303"},"modified":"2025-01-22T21:04:15","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T10:04:15","slug":"club-to-create-horse-racing-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/sport\/club-to-create-horse-racing-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Club to create horse racing history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LISMORE Turf Club will host the Northern Rivers Racing Association Country Championship qualifier next month, marking the return of the historic $150,000 race after last year&#8217;s washout.<\/p>\n<p>The road to the $1 million final at Randwick for local owners and trainers begins at the Lismore venue on Saturday, February 22.<\/p>\n<p>The washout marked the start of a rain-affected year, which also saw the Lismore Cup cancelled due to wet weather in September.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary-manager Scott Jones said the club is now preparing for what could be the biggest race in the history of the track.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the biggest race we&#8217;ve ever had, it&#8217;s a bit like our Everest,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Last year the presale tickets were the most we&#8217;ve sold.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re grateful for Racing NSW for allowing us to have a turn, one thing about Lismore after the floods is if you put an event on, people will come out and support it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/01\/169668645_1015817366_24528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"428\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lismore Turf Club secretary-manager Scott Jones will be busy preparing for the country qualifier on Saturday, February 22. Photo: SUPPLIED.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a chance for everyone to see the best race the club can offer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Country Championships series is made up of seven regional qualifiers and two wild card races.<\/p>\n<p>The final will comprise 16 starters with the first two finishers in each regional qualifying race and the winners of both wild cards.<\/p>\n<p>In other Northern Rivers racing, the Kris Lee-trained Lord of Biscay won the $65,000 Ballina RSL Club Summer Cup last week.<\/p>\n<p>Four-year-old gelding Captain Fenkel finished second after making the trip down from the Gold Coast with trainer Marcus Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>Both horses qualified for the $3 million Big Dance at Sydney in October.<\/p>\n<p>The next Northern Rivers race meeting will be held at Tweed River Jockey Club on Saturday, January 25.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LISMORE Turf Club will host the Northern Rivers Racing Association Country Championship qualifier next month, marking the return of the historic $150,000 race after last year&#8217;s washout.
