NSW STATE Emergency Services in the Northern Rivers are calling for more volunteers to undergo flood rescue training, equipping them with lifesaving skills for future emergencies.<\/p>\n

The Northern Rivers SES unit is offering training programs for volunteers interested in becoming flood rescue operators, who play a crucial role in disaster response by assisting people and animals during emergencies.<\/p>\n

These highly trained volunteers develop skills in boat operations, rope work, and evacuations.<\/p>\n

NSW SES north-eastern zone commander Gregory Swindells said ongoing scenario-based training ensures teams are prepared for real-world situations.<\/p>\n

“The NSW SES is the lead agency for flood rescue operations,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The flood rescue training is all about saving lives and keeping communities safe in an emergency.”<\/p>\n

Training courses are held at various locations throughout the year, with the final stage conducted by the State Rescue Board in Penrith.<\/p>\n

The qualification for in-water or on-water flood rescue operations typically takes 12 to 18 months to complete.<\/p>\n

To enrol in flood rescue operator training, volunteers must first be members of a local SES unit and complete induction training and prerequisite courses.<\/p>\n

“Those undertaking the flood rescue operator must fulfill a fit for role assessment which includes swimming, lifting capability, hiking and hauling a load,” Mr Swindells said.<\/p>\n

“There are a number of different pathway programs and courses volunteers can complete prior to undertaking flood rescue training.”<\/p>\n

These programs cover first aid, operating communications equipment, and incident management.<\/p>\n

Additional training in rescue operations includes safety procedures, scene preservation, land-based rescues, and boat operations.<\/p>\n
