To others, he&#8217;s remembered as a founding member of the legendary band Mental As Anything.<\/p>\n<p>At 73, Reg Mombassa \u2014 born Chris O&#8217;Doherty \u2014 continues to pursue both his passions: music and art.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Mombassa was named a finalist in the Archibald Prize, Australia&#8217;s most prestigious award for portrait painting. At the same time, he remains an active performer with his band Dog Trumpet.<\/p>\n<p>Mental As Anything formed in the 1970s, after Mombassa and Martin Plaza met as students at the National Art School, then known as East Sydney Technical College. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1990, during a break from the Mentals, Mombassa and his brother Peter O&#8217;Doherty \u2014 also a member of the band \u2014 formed Dog Trumpet as an outlet for their own music. Since then, they&#8217;ve released multiple albums and have a new one on the way: Live Forever, due out in July. The title track offers a thoughtful meditation on mortality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s sort of about wanting to live forever and not wanting to live forever,&#8221; Mombassa said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s ambiguous in its meaning \u2013 things that we fear are both good and bad \u2013 and it&#8217;s kind of like a pop song.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another one of the songs on the album is about Marianne Faithfull which we originally recorded with the Mentals in the 1990s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/RegMombassaleftwit_57630.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reg Mombassa with his brother Peter O&#8217;Doherty in Dog Trumpet.
