NORTHERN Rivers residents are being urged to get their flu shot early, with national case numbers already nearly double those recorded at the same time last year.<\/p>\n
Primary healthcare network Healthy North Coast said flu cases typically peak between June and September, and early vaccination is the best protection.<\/p>\n
“Winter is coming, and this year there’s already been more than 55,000 flu cases reported in Australia,” Healthy North Coast chief executive Monika Wheeler said. “That’s almost double last year’s number.”<\/p>\n
“Getting vaccinated is a simple, safe and effective way of ensuring that you, your family and your loved ones are protected.”<\/p>\n
Symptoms of the flu include fever, body aches, cough and sore throat, which can leave people bedridden for days. In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia or hospitalisation.<\/p>\n
Healthy North Coast medical educator Dr Beth Allin said flu shots were the best defence.<\/p>\n
“The best time to get your flu vaccination is now,” she said.<\/p>\n
“It’s also a good time to make sure you’re up to date with vaccinations against other respiratory diseases like RSV and COVID-19. It is safe to receive these vaccinations at the same time as your influenza vaccine.”<\/p>\n
The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged six months and over, and is free for those eligible under the National Immunisation Program.<\/p>\n
Bookings can be made online or through GPs, and most people aged five and over can be vaccinated at their local pharmacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
