SPRUNG Dance Theatre will step inside the boxing ring to deliver its next round of creative workshops with the Knock Out program to be used as a physical performance space for the disabled community.<\/p>\n

The Lismore theatre group delivers a range of contemporary dance and community arts programs specifically for deaf and disabled artists.<\/p>\n

The Knock Out workshop will be run by circus and dance artists Gabrielle Griffin and Simone O’Brien at Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre from July 17-19.<\/p>\n

Artistic director Daniele Constance said it will explore stories of knockdowns, comebacks, fantasy and triumphs while using movement, imagination and the unique environment of a boxing ring.<\/p>\n

“We’re really excited about Knock Out, it will be the first time we’ve run a workshop program with a boxing ring,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It is a physical space where the participants will get to use the ring and ropes as a vehicle for storytelling and movement.<\/p>\n

“The ladies running it have a background in physical theatre, circus and dance. When they’re involved it’s always a good time.”<\/p>\n

The group develops original dance and performance through collaborative and disability-led processes with its Dance Ensemble program.<\/p>\n

It starts with an introduction into participation in arts and experiences through the community program.<\/p>\n

The community program welcomes newcomers into dance and theatre which can lead to full-time performance roles.<\/p>\n

“We have professional artists in the ensemble program who are looking to build on their careers,” Constance said.<\/p>\n

“The community program can be a bridge for people looking to move into the ensemble program once they build up enough confidence.<\/p>\n

“Not many places offer this in an accessible and inclusive way; what we do at Sprung is unique.<\/p>\n

“We’re leaving a legacy in the region in lots of different ways and we’re passionate about what we do.<\/p>\n

“We see firsthand the confidence and opportunities that come out of it and we would love to see more people get involved.”<\/p>\n

The group runs a regular program on Thursday each week with different workshops throughout the year.<\/p>\n

No experience in dance, theatre or circus is needed.<\/p>\n
