{"id":114914,"date":"2025-08-08T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=114914"},"modified":"2025-08-06T19:10:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T09:10:14","slug":"northern-rivers-pushes-to-cut-single-use-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/news\/northern-rivers-pushes-to-cut-single-use-products\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Rivers pushes to cut single-use products"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL councils, schools, event organisers and businesses across the Northern Rivers are working to phase out single-use products.<\/p>\n<p>North East Waste education coordinator Linda Tohver said the focus was on takeaway food packaging such as coffee cups, plates and bowls that are often marketed as &#8220;compostable&#8221; or &#8220;biodegradable&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;None of these items can be placed in green bins, they&#8217;re not recyclable and many contain plastic and nasty chemicals,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re used for a few minutes but their environmental impact lasts for many years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>North East Waste is urging food businesses and event managers to replace single-use items with reusable products, and to encourage customers to bring their own cups and containers for takeaway food and drinks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/08\/IMG_2971_85088.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"891\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reusable cups and plates are helping Northern Rivers events cut down on waste. Photo: SUPPLIED.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve come so far with banning single-use plastic bags across Australia, but it&#8217;s time to step it up and put the planet before convenience culture,&#8221; Tohver said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Northern Rivers is already leading the way in transitioning to reusables and setting an example for the rest of regional NSW.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Events including Byron Farmers Markets, Byron Writers Festival and Love Lennox Festival have introduced reusable cups, plates and bowls washed on-site in commercial dishwashers.<\/p>\n<p>Love Lennox Festival 2025 co-director and Business Lennox Head vice-president Alexander Sharkey said the event saved more than 3,000 single-use items from landfill by switching to reusables.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/08\/IMG_2969_85120.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"849\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Community initiatives are reducing thousands of disposable items from landfill.
