TWEED Shire Council will take on four new apprentices and a cadet by early 2026 under the state government’s Fresh Start Program.<\/p>\n
The $252.2 million initiative, launched last year by the Minns Labor Government, funds apprenticeships, traineeships and cadetships in local councils across New South Wales.<\/p>\n
Lismore MP Janelle Saffin, who helped broker the program with Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig and the United Services Union, said it was encouraging to see councils like Tweed taking full advantage of the scheme.<\/p>\n
More than 60 per cent of the 500 approved positions so far have been created in regional or rural areas, including 43 recruits across Northern Rivers councils.<\/p>\n
Tweed Shire general manager Troy Green said the program had helped establish the council’s in-house training academy.<\/p>\n
“Following the most recent funding announcement, the Academy will welcome four additional apprentices and one cadet by February 2026, bringing the total number of Fresh Start-funded employees to 18,” he said.<\/p>\n
“By keeping training, wages and experience within Northern New South Wales, the Academy is not only supporting local residents to launch their careers but also strengthening the capability of local businesses and community services.”<\/p>\n
Academy coordinator Christina Vuckovic said it had been rewarding to see the enthusiasm and commitment of new recruits and mentors.<\/p>\n
Council plans to expand the program further through partnerships with local schools and employment providers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
