{"id":118663,"date":"2025-11-08T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=118663"},"modified":"2025-11-06T12:53:31","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T01:53:31","slug":"i-had-all-those-big-dreams-so-it-was-a-painful-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/living\/i-had-all-those-big-dreams-so-it-was-a-painful-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"Local folk orchestra brings global ditties Down Under"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FROM the lilting melodies of Ireland to the infectious grooves of Brazil, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheMullumFolk\/\">Mullum Folk Orchestra<\/a> will bring the sounds of global folk traditions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/drillhalltheatre.org.au\/mullumfolkorchestra\/\">Drill Hall Theatre<\/a> this month.<\/p>\n<p>The 16-piece orchestra features a mix of instruments, including double bass, violins, guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, keyboard, piano accordion, clarinet, soprano sax and flute.<\/p>\n<p>Mullum Folk Orchestra manager Laura Brennan said her love of folk music blossomed after years of attending the Woodford Folk Festival and the Global Music Festival in Bellingen.<\/p>\n<p>Brennan has been part of the orchestra since it was founded by local musician and gypsy violinist Laura Targett in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were about eight of us who gathered weekly in Mullumbimby, and Laura taught us tunes aurally,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Our first performance was with her at the Mullum Music Festival. The following year, she left Byron Shire to travel around Australia and ended up moving to Bellingen. Mark Bromley took over as musical director, and we have been practicing fortnightly and performing a few times a year ever since.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are mostly ordinary folk with day jobs, from the towns and villages of Byron Shire. People come from a variety of musical backgrounds and experience. Some have studied music and musicology at university, others have played in symphony orchestras in Sydney and on the Central Coast, and quite a few have played in local groups, including The Loveys, Sounds of Old Brazil, Upbeat and the Love Handles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brennan said she loves learning to play ditties from around the world and playing with such a wonderful group of local musicians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our repertoire includes tunes from Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Russia, Ukraine, the Caribbean, Ireland, Spain, Italy, France, the Middle East, Brazil and other parts of South America,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We also play some original compositions written by our musical director.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the orchestra has performed at venues across the region, including Mullumbimby Civic Memorial Hall, The Bowlo in Bangalow, Tintenbar Hall and Rochdale Theatre in Lismore.<\/p>\n<p>Their upcoming Summer Celebration concert will take place at the Drill Hall Theatre in Mullumbimby from 3.30pm on November 16.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will play two sets of music from around the world \u2014 upbeat tunes arranged for our 16-piece orchestra,&#8221; Brennan said. &#8220;Each set will include a couple of circle dances, led by one of the orchestra members, Anna Parker.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are available via<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trybooking.com\/events\/landing\/1490348\"> trybooking.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FROM the lilting melodies of Ireland to the infectious grooves of Brazil, the Mullum Folk Orchestra will bring the sounds of global folk traditions to the Drill Hall Theatre this month.
