A SMALL idea to play good music with good people and broadcast weekly videos on YouTube has become a mammoth international endeavour, garnering hundreds of millions of followers and billions of views.<\/p>\n

The global smash that is Hindley Street Country Club (HSCC), featuring its dynamic nine-piece band and a collection of unique cover arrangements, returns to Tweed on January 30 and 31.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2017 by Constantine Delo, HSCC began as a group of local musicians who recorded and rearranged song versions, uploading them on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n

The videos have since generated over 850 million YouTube views, with half a billion social media subscribers, and have collectively accumulated more than five billion views across social media platforms.<\/p>\n

“It’s stupid numbers, really. Sometimes it freaks me out, because I think to myself a million is a lot of anything, but five billion – that’s crazy,” Delo said.<\/p>\n

“We did over 15 shows in the US this year and a headline gig in Times Square in New York, with a billboard and the whole bit.<\/p>\n

“One of the guys interviewing me said, ‘Are you aware that you guys have got more subscribers than the people that you cover?’ It’s been mental.”<\/p>\n

The modest enterprise grew in tandem with the technological advancements of the time and reached its stride during the COVID pandemic, when audiences worldwide had little choice but to consume live music on their screens.<\/p>\n

“I just got a bunch of guys together and would rearrange well-known songs and just record them with modern technology and play them how I hear music,” Delo said.<\/p>\n

“We had the right guys, and just kept on churning them out every week, and then during COVID, we went nuts.<\/p>\n

“People were home, and many who were young in the 70s and 80s were reliving their youth, arguably at one of the worst times in history.”<\/p>\n

The core group of nine musicians is supplemented by over 150 guest players over the years, many of whom played gigs in bands along Adelaide’s Hindley Street from the 1970s to the 1990s.<\/p>\n

HSCC is named for the reputation of the street, which, in addition to pubs, clubs, amusement arcades, cinemas, fast food outlets and ice cream parlours, housed adult entertainment, tattoo shops, motorcycle gangs and a steady stream of traffic cruising the strip.<\/p>\n

The eclectic mix of activity today does not contain a ‘country club’, nor does the band play country music. The joke lies in the juxtaposition of the genteel concept of such a club with the diverse and vibrant culture of Hindley Street.<\/p>\n

“I’m a firm believer that it works because I just stayed true to the music,” Delo said.<\/p>\n

“It wasn’t about making millions of dollars. It was about playing good music, with good people, for good people, and because there was integrity in it, people related to it, and it resonated.”<\/p>\n

The band’s heavy forthcoming tour schedule includes a national tour in the US, a summer tour in Eastern Europe with stops in the UK, as well as additional shows in Central and South America, Japan, and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

HSCC continues to release videos every week on YouTube every Friday at 8 am.<\/p>\n
