Brett\u202fWhiteley oil painting celebrating the sun and surf of Byron\u202fBay has sold at auction for $1\u202fmillion.<\/p>\n

Never previously offered on the secondary market, Midday at Wategos Beach, Byron\u202fBay<\/em> was created during the summer of 1989\u20111990.<\/p>\n

The work is part of a series inspired by the far north coast of NSW holiday town and was painted following a time of upheaval for Whiteley, who had recently returned from travels to Morocco, London and Paris. He died in 1992.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very happy and content, and felt that he was coping with his addiction issues, and he just found the landscape of Byron\u202fBay incredibly exhilarating and inspiring,\u201d said Geoffrey Smith from auction house Smith\u202fand\u202fSinger.<\/p>\n

The result, in the middle of the expected range, includes a buyer\u2019s premium charged by the auction house.<\/p>\n

With a reserve of $800,000 and high estimate of $1.2\u202fmillion including buyer\u2019s premium, several parties had shown interest ahead of the auction, Smith said.<\/p>\n

But will the painting end up adorning the walls of a Byron\u202fBay rich\u2011lister? Who can say, but Smith hoped the buyer would at least be home to keep an eye on the valuable artwork.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey may not want works of that value hanging in their homes if they\u2019re not permanent places of residence, but what better than to have one of Australia\u2019s greatest artists painting Byron\u202fBay, hanging on your wall, wherever you may live,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Brett\u202fWhiteley\u2019s oil painting Midday at Wategos Beach, Byron\u202fBay<\/em> has been sold at auction.<\/p>\n

More than 40 works by Whiteley have previously sold for more than the $1\u202fmillion mark, according to Art\u202fSales\u202fDigest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The auction record for the artist is $6.1\u202fmillion for Henri\u2019s Armchair<\/em> (1974\u201175) which went under the hammer in 2020 and also set a record auction result for an Australian painting.<\/p>\n

Several other Whiteleys were also listed for sale at the auction held in Sydney on Tuesday night, the least expensive a linocut with a low estimate of $9,000.<\/p>\n

Also among the 63 lots were works by well\u2011known Australian artists Hans\u202fHeysen, Margaret\u202fPreston, Charles\u202fBlackman, Sidney\u202fNolan, William\u202fDobell, Albert\u202fTucker, Del\u202fKathryn\u202fBarton and Criss\u202fCanning.<\/p>\n

A modernist landscape by Adelaide\u2011born Dorrit\u202fBlack, Sicilian Mountain<\/em> (1928) set an auction record for the artist, selling for $687,500 \u2011 far above its high estimate of $180,000.<\/p>\n

The painting had been held in the artist\u2019s family for decades, and never before offered on the secondary market.<\/p>\n

But the buyer may have to wait some months before they can hang it on their walls: the artwork is currently on show in Sydney as part of the Art\u202fGallery\u202fof\u202fNSW exhibition Dangerously Modern: Australian Women Artists in Europe 1890\u20111940<\/em>.<\/p>\n
