BALLINA Shire Council has removed fencing around Williams Reserve with the popular sports field reopened after 12 months of repairs and turf upgrades<\/p>\n
The reserve was closed in December last year, with works delayed due to damage caused by Cyclone Alfred and ongoing turf supply issues.<\/p>\n
Upgrades to the playing surface and irrigation system have now been completed, allowing the ground to return to use after the Lennox Head rugby union club was unable to access the field throughout the 2025 season.<\/p>\n
The Lennox Head cricket club and junior rugby league club were also forced to relocate during the closure, while the Combined Sports Association moved its planned Christmas Carols event to Club Lennox.<\/p>\n
A council spokesperson said persistent wet weather during the winter months had also contributed to delays.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, persistent wet weather delayed works and the delivery of new turf,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlans included a new irrigation system, and the playing surface has been regraded and turfed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The upgrade forms part of Ballina Shire Council\u2019s Delivery Program and Operational Plan for 2025\u20132029, which outlines key infrastructure and community projects over the next four years.<\/p>\n
Also included in the plan is the Lennox Head to Cooper Close Shared Path project, a 2.1km, three-metre-wide pathway running along Byron Street, Byron Bay Road and Cooper Close.<\/p>\n
The shared path will connect Lennox Head\u2019s town centre with Sanctuary Village and Fig Tree Hill Drive.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe plan outlines council\u2019s priorities for the next four years and details the services, infrastructure, and initiatives we will progress to support our community\u2019s needs,\u201d Cr Cadwallader said.<\/p>\n
