{"id":121073,"date":"2026-01-12T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=121073"},"modified":"2026-01-09T11:33:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T00:33:23","slug":"how-a-group-of-female-artists-banded-together-to-combat-byron-bays-sky-high-rents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/news\/how-a-group-of-female-artists-banded-together-to-combat-byron-bays-sky-high-rents\/","title":{"rendered":"How a group of female artists banded together to combat Byron Bay\u2019s sky-high rents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EMILY Brown had long dreamt of having a space in Byron Bay to display her artworks, but the eye-watering cost of rent had always put her off.<\/p>\n<p>Brown, who works under the name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emilybodhi.com\/\">Emily Bodhi,<\/a> had an idea sitting in her back pocket for several years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought, &#8216;What if a few artists shared a space and managed to make it work as a collective?'&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>When a space became available for lease next to <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/news\/from-otherworld-to-haven-whats-inside-byrons-reimagined-interactive-art-gallery\/\">HAVEN<\/a> (formerly OTHERWORLD) in the old Woolworths building on Jonson Street, Brown called the real estate agent straight away and said she would take it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then I had to retroactively hustle to get it sorted,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/ColourfulartworksatB_70966.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emily Bodhi&#8217;s artworks on display at Byron Art Collective. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She spent the next month working 12-hour days, visiting artists and galleries and scrolling Instagram, curating a group of strong creatives to share the space.<\/p>\n<p>Her idea has finally come to fruition with the opening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emilybodhi.com\/about-3-1\">Byron Art Collective,<\/a> which showcases the work of 23 female artists and artisans, including jewellers and candlemakers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was like a shared dream across multiple people who said they have always wanted a space in Byron but they didn&#8217;t know how to make it work,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The collective includes artists such as Kylee Joy, who uses natural paints; Indigenous artist Donna Albany; and Carley Cornelissen, whose vibrant mural graces the exterior of the building.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from the UK, Brown lived in Portugal and Dubai before moving to Australia in 2017, drawn to Byron Bay by its natural beauty and creative community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It feels like it&#8217;s on the pulse \u2013 there&#8217;s always things happening here,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/AsignforByronArtColl_73147.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sign for Byron Art Collective. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A passionate wildlife lover who previously ran an animal rescue sanctuary in the Byron Bay hinterland, she mostly creates colourful and quirky paintings of animals.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to make the space exclusively for female artists was partly aimed at helping women reconnect with their creative identities after having children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I guess my taste in art is inherently feminine, and as a mother myself I know we often put our careers on the backburner for our kids,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Brown also hopes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emilybodhi.com\/about-3-1\">Byron Art Collective<\/a> will become a place to make new friends with like-minded people, offering a &#8216;Chai and Canvas&#8217; class, a &#8216;Create and Connect&#8217; event with mocktails on Thursday nights, as well as children&#8217;s art workshops throughout the school term and holidays.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EMILY Brown had long dreamt of having a space in Byron Bay to display her artworks, but the eye-watering cost of rent had always put her off.
