IN the late 1970s and early 1980s, Don Lane was one of Australia’s most famous faces.<\/p>\n

Accompanied by his longtime sidekick Bert Newton, The Don Lane Show became one of the most popular variety programs in Australian history, winning five Logie Awards.<\/p>\n

Now his son, PJ Lane, is recreating that era with a tribute to his American-born dad, who died of Alzheimer’s disease in 2009 at the age of 75.<\/p>\n

“I got approached about doing a documentary about dad’s life and I thought, ‘This is a great idea but his life isn’t a documentary \u2013 his life is a spectacular variety musical’,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I have been doing little bits of the show here and there and testing it out in phases for about 15 years. We did a showcase of it last January and launched the show in Melbourne in November and we did a lot of Sydney shows, but Twin Towns kicks off the regional tour.”<\/p>\n

I Love Your Faces: The Don Lane Story is presented in three parts. The first explores Don’s early life as an up-and-coming entertainer in the old Las Vegas showrooms when they were run by the Mob, and his eventual move to Australia. The second part highlights the glitz and glamour of his television career, with the audience becoming the live studio audience. The third part focuses on PJ’s own story.<\/p>\n

“It’s certainly an emotional journey, and that’s exactly what we wanted,” he said.<\/p>\n

PJ was born in Los Angeles, after the family had moved there when The Don Lane Show ended in 1983. But they returned to Australia when he was two, after Don was offered a contract at Channel 10, hosting shows such as You’ve Gotta Be Joking, Late Night Oz and Talkin’ to Kids.<\/p>\n

While best known as a variety show host, PJ grew up in a different era, when Don was broadcasting the NFL Show on ABC.<\/p>\n

“He basically pioneered American football in Australia,” he said. “He got flown over for two Superbowls and I went to one of them. I grew up with the sports show Don Lane, not the variety show Don Lane. It was only when I was a teenager that I understood the full gravity of the Don Lane Show and the impact it had.”<\/p>\n

PJ went on to play professional basketball and act in TV shows such as Neighbours and Underbelly. He also serves as an ambassador for the University of NSW’s Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing.<\/p>\n

Perhaps unsurprisingly, PJ said most bookings for the show come from people aged over 40.<\/p>\n

“It resonates a lot with a certain demographic,” he said. “The younger crowd is almost confused by it, but when they come along with their parents they often end up liking it the most. It’s a brand of entertainment they haven’t really been exposed to.”<\/p>\n
