ALSTONVILLE landscaper Joanna Hepton has emerged as one of Australia’s top performers in some of the world’s toughest obstacle course races.<\/p>\n

Hepton, 28, has won 26 of the 28 individual Spartan races she has competed in.<\/p>\n

Spartan racing tests endurance, strength and mental resilience across demanding courses featuring obstacles such as fire jumps, barbed wire crawls, spear throws and heavy carries.<\/p>\n

Hepton combines long distance running with strength training, which has helped her become a consistent podium finisher.<\/p>\n

“I realised pretty early that I wasn’t going to be a sprinter, so I ventured into the more adventurous and physically tough stuff,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It seems to be a strength of mine and I really enjoy it.<\/p>\n

“I like a challenge and it keeps drawing me back to see how much I can improve and where it can take me.”<\/p>\n

Working outdoors in a physically demanding job has helped her build the strength and endurance she relies on in competition.<\/p>\n

She plans to ramp up training ahead of the Obstacle Course Racing Championships at Ivory Rock in Queensland in May.<\/p>\n

“I train with my sisters and my dad, so it’s a bit of a family project,” Hepton said.<\/p>\n

“So much can happen on the day, and penalties can make a huge difference, especially in shorter races.<\/p>\n

“Missing an obstacle like the spear throw at the end could cost you three minutes.<\/p>\n
