IT is understood Bluesfest Byron Bay<\/a> will be cancelled in 2026 due to low ticket sales \u2013 a development likely to send shockwaves through the local community and the wider music industry.<\/p>\n

Tickets were no longer available for sale on the festival\u2019s website on Friday morning, with every option marked \u201callocation exhausted\u201d.<\/p>\n

An official announcement of the cancellation of the event, due to be held over the Easter long weekend, is expected to be made later today.<\/p>\n

The news comes after Bluesfest director Peter Noble<\/span><\/span> said that 2025 would be the festival\u2019s final year, citing rising production costs, soaring insurance premiums and increasing weather risks.<\/p>\n

The announcement led to a surge in ticket sales, but when Noble later revealed the festival would return in 2026, many festivalgoers expressed anger, saying they felt misled.<\/p>\n

Noble told UK music industry magazine IQ<\/a> that the announcement had largely been intended to attract the attention of the NSW government, which he said had declined to invest in Bluesfest during a challenging economic period while backing \u201cimported\u201d events such as South by Southwest<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

The cancellation has much wider ramifications, with a report commissioned by organisers in 2024 revealing the event brings more than $200 million to the NSW economy.<\/p>\n

The figure includes more than $40 million for the Byron Shire and over $80 million across the Northern Rivers region, providing work for around people.<\/p>\n

The long-running festival was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions before making a major comeback in 2022, when it sold around 100,000 tickets. However, a large portion of those sales came very late, as many fans were hesitant to commit amid fears the event could again be cancelled. The result was a shift in buying behaviour, with more people waiting until the last minute to purchase tickets.<\/p>\n

Slower sales continued in 2023 and 2024, with many festivalgoers holding off until closer to the event. At the same time, the cost-of-living squeeze has reduced discretionary spending, while the costs of staging festivals \u2013 including insurance, logistics and international artist travel \u2013 have surged.<\/p>\n

Bluesfest is not alone in facing these pressures. A number of major Australian festivals have been cancelled in recent years amid rising insurance costs, the expense of securing international artists, weather risks, shifting ticket-buying habits and broader cost-of-living pressures. Among them are Splendour in the Grass<\/span><\/span> and Groovin the Moo<\/span><\/span>, both of which have cancelled recent editions.<\/p>\n

Byron Writers Festival’s weekend program was also cancelled at late notice last year after heavy rain caused flooding and safety concerns at Bangalow Showground,<\/a> which had been the festival\u2019s home since 2023. But the event will be back with a new format in 2026.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n
