While the play was written more than 80 years ago, Saxe believes its themes remain relatable today.<\/p>\n
“There’s themes of happy distractions, safe places and escapism,” Saxe said.<\/p>\n
“We have all got our traumas and responsibilities we have a desire to escape. We have to find joy in life and escape from our personal worries and worries of the world instead of doom scrolling.”<\/p>\n
The cast includes Toni Forbes and Banyan Jay, who performed in the Company’s The Female of the Species last year, along with newcomers Jyoti Smith and Lachlan Hall.<\/p>\n
“We really want to honour the story and Tennessee Williams,” Saxe said. “I hope audiences feel as touched by this as we do.”<\/p>\n
Saxe also raided local op shops for costumes for the production.<\/p>\n
“Part of my treasure hunting was finding a couple of 1930s-style dresses for myself to wear,” she said. “We encourage the audience to get into the theme, but not be put off coming if they can’t.”<\/p>\n
The Glass Menagerie begins at Rochdale Theatre on Friday 24 April and runs over weekends until Sunday 10 May.<\/p>\n
