SEVEN extraordinary women from seven different decades took to the stage at Byron Bay Golf Club<\/a> last week, sharing powerful, personal stories of resilience at the A Small Shift \u2013 I Will Survive event.<\/p>\n

From childhood sexual abuse<\/a> to suicidal ideation, no subject was off limits, as speakers aged from their 20s to their 80s each delivered seven-minute accounts of survival.<\/p>\n

Around 100 people attended the event, raising more than $2000 for local charity The SHIFT Project,<\/a> which delivers an educational and residential transition program for women experiencing or at risk of homelessness.<\/p>\n

Comedian Mandy Nolan,<\/a> who organised and MC’d the evening, said that as the organisation’s fundraiser she is often asked to share the stories of women facing homelessness. But she said their duty of care is to protect the integrity and confidentiality of those women.<\/p>\n

Instead, she chose to broaden the focus.<\/p>\n

“SHIFT is about resilience \u2013 about what comes after crisis,” she said. “So, let’s listen to women who have survived it, because those who go through the SHIFT Project are no different from us.”<\/p>\n

Nolan invited women she had come to know over decades living in the region to speak and said she had been inundated with emails and texts from people in the audience who were moved and inspired by their stories.<\/p>\n

“I thought the speakers were incredible,” she said. “They aren’t all professional \u2013 some may have spoken in public before; some never. I think the vulnerability makes them really powerful. In a world of AI, this is juicy human awesomeness!<\/p>\n

“I love seeing women do things like this \u2013 it can really change how you see yourself when you get that kind of love and acceptance from an audience.”<\/p>\n

The SHIFT Project receives no government funding and relies entirely on philanthropy, fundraising and social enterprises to operate.<\/p>\n

“We now have to pay $20,000 per annum in rent on our two houses for emergency accommodation, so we will probably be directing the money raised there,” she said.<\/p>\n

“We would love it if people would consider supporting The SHIFT Project by becoming regular givers. That means $5 or $10 or $20 \u2013 whatever you can afford on a weekly basis. It makes a difference to the lives of women in this community. We have an 88 per cent success rate of getting women back into their lives. It’s after the crisis work, so it’s about building confidence, relationships, work pathways, housing options \u2013 all the things that fall away in domestic violence, addiction or mental illness. Government funding models don’t fund the work we do, like getting new tyres for someone’s car so they can get to work or supporting re-training or financial counselling sessions. This project changes lives.”<\/p>\n

The event was the second of its kind, and, following strong community support, Nolan is already planning another.<\/p>\n
