	{"id":126545,"date":"2026-06-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=126545"},"modified":"2026-06-03T21:03:57","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T11:03:57","slug":"council-hunts-tree-vandals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/news\/council-hunts-tree-vandals\/","title":{"rendered":"Council hunts tree vandals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COUNCIL crews have discovered significant damage to vegetation at Cabarita Headland, including a mature Norfolk Pine that had been cut through and left standing.<\/p>\n<p>Further inspections along the Cabarita Hill walking track found two more Norfolk Pines that had been cut almost through the stem, along with damage to a Pandanus tree.<\/p>\n<p>The council&#8217;s sustainable communities and environment acting director, Jane Lofthouse, said the damage was significant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Council crews found one mature Norfolk Pine cut through and left in place,&#8221; Lofthouse said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Later, it was discovered that two more Norfolk Pines had been cut almost through the stem.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A Pandanus tree has also been damaged.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pandanus trees are very slow growing species, as well as being iconic coastal species.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lofthouse said vegetation vandalism had occurred in many locations across the Tweed and prompted the council to adopt a formal policy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Removal, poisoning and damage to mature and important trees on public land has occurred in many locations across the Tweed,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126547\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126547\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/treecutcaba_01861.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/treecutcaba_01861.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/treecutcaba_01861-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/treecutcaba_01861-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/treecutcaba_01861-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Damage to a Norfolk Pine along the Cabarita Hill walking track at Cabarita Headland. Photo: Pancho Symes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This led to council developing the Vegetation Vandalism on Public Land Policy to make it clear to the community that council takes a zero-tolerance approach to these actions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lofthouse said the affected vegetation played an important role in protecting the coastline and supporting wildlife habitat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Vegetation and large trees play a vital role in protecting the coastline from erosion and providing habitat for local wildlife,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trees on headlands are valued community assets, appreciated for the significant amenity and character they add to the landscape.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lofthouse said penalties depended on the circumstances and available evidence, with the council seeking information from the public about the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Penalties vary depending on the circumstances, the species of trees, location and which legislation applies,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fines can be up to several thousands of dollars and orders may include restoration and rehabilitation of the damaged vegetation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fines are only available as an option where there is proof of actions being taken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The council is asking anyone with information about the damage to contact it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COUNCIL crews have discovered significant damage to vegetation at Cabarita Headland, including a mature Norfolk Pine that had been cut through and left standing.
