“Even though I had to travel a lot for sport to find better opportunities, home was always where I felt most comfortable,” she said. “So, making the decision to move my whole life to New Zealand was a big one.<\/p>\n
“It meant stepping away from everything I’ve ever known \u2013 my family, my friends, my job \u2013 and starting fresh in a completely new environment.”<\/p>\n
While a maiden NRLW appearance remains a goal, Hickling is focused on making the most of her first season in a professional environment.<\/p>\n
“I’m still new to the environment, so for me it’s about taking everything in, developing my game and earning my place within the squad,” she said.<\/p>\n
“A bonus would be to make my NRLW debut this season. But for now, my focus is to adapt to the new environment and be comfortable and happy.”<\/p>\n
Warriors NRLW coach Ron Griffiths said Hickling’s football intelligence and maturity made her an exciting prospect for the club.<\/p>\n
“Watching her play for the Northern Rivers Titans in the NSWRL Country Championships, there was much to admire,” he said.<\/p>\n
“She is an organising halfback who is defensively brave and has the ability to manage a game while seeing it unfold and grab the in-between ad-lib moments.<\/p>\n
“However, it’s her maturity beyond her years that is the most impressive trait.”<\/p>\n
