	{"id":127142,"date":"2026-06-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/?p=127142"},"modified":"2026-06-18T14:19:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T04:19:09","slug":"150-years-on-murwillumbah-rowing-club-honours-australias-first-world-champion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/byroncoasttimes\/news\/150-years-on-murwillumbah-rowing-club-honours-australias-first-world-champion\/","title":{"rendered":"150 years on, Murwillumbah Rowing Club honours Australia&#8217;s first world champion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN members of Murwillumbah Rowing Club take to the Tweed River on 27 June, they will commemorate 150 years since Edward Trickett became Australia&#8217;s first sporting world champion.<\/p>\n<p>The club will commemorate the anniversary of Trickett&#8217;s world championship victory with a 6.84km row, matching the distance the Sydney-born sculler covered on London&#8217;s River Thames.<\/p>\n<p>Trickett defeated English champion Joseph Sadler over four-and-a-quarter miles in 1876, completing the course in 24 minutes and 35 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>For Trickett&#8217;s great-granddaughter Helen Albury a long-time member of Murwillumbah Rowing Club, the milestone remains significant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Edward being the first Australian to achieve a world championship is certainly a moment in Australian history,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To be able to recognise this feat 150 years later is very special.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a rower myself I know how much discipline and hard work is needed to even learn how to row let alone get to the level of winning races.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Albury said Trickett&#8217;s early life was shaped by determination and hard labour, with family history recounting that his father George was a transported convict who later owned a quarry on Sydney Harbour.<\/p>\n<p>She said Trickett and his brothers rowed sandstone across the harbour, helping supply stone used for projects including Lady Macquarie&#8217;s Chair and repairs to the lighthouse on South Head.<\/p>\n<p>It was during this work that he met his future wife, Maria, the daughter of the lighthouse keeper.<\/p>\n<p>After winning races at regattas on the Parramatta River from an early age, Albury said his talent was recognised by prominent rowing figures and sponsors who backed his challenge for the world title in England.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127144\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127144\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/EdwardTrickett_44032.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/EdwardTrickett_44032.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/EdwardTrickett_44032-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/EdwardTrickett_44032-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/EdwardTrickett_44032-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/EdwardTrickett_44032-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edward Trickett. Photo: Supplied by Trickett family.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After a six-week sea voyage, Trickett arrived in Britain and adapted to the use of the sliding seat before facing Sadler on the Thames in London.<\/p>\n<p>Referencing Gordon Trickett&#8217;s book, Ned Trickett: Champion Sculler of the World, Albury said the victory stunned the English rowing establishment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That an outsider from the convict colony of Australia could have taken out the championship award obviously had not been contemplated,&#8221; Albury said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the English to have lost to a colonial was certainly an embarrassment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While Trickett was a celebrated sporting hero, Albury said attitudes towards convict ancestry meant his story was not always passed down through the generations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though he was a professional rower and was paid for his wins, once he stopped winning and stopped rowing his friends also fell away,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Edward&#8217;s children did not really talk about him to their children, because he was the son of a convict.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now people are happy to have convict heritage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Murwillumbah Rowing Club has honoured Trickett for the past 13 years through an annual commemorative row, traditionally held on Australia Day.<\/p>\n<p>This year, members will gather on the anniversary of his historic victory with the row, followed by a gathering at the clubhouse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think Edward would be very pleased that his relatives did continue to row and that being involved and volunteering in a local club to encourage people to row, would mean a lot to him,&#8221; Albury said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_127145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127145\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127145\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/SingleMRCrower_42758.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/SingleMRCrower_42758.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/SingleMRCrower_42758-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/SingleMRCrower_42758-1024x1019.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/SingleMRCrower_42758-768x764.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-127145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Murwillumbah Rowing Club member pictured rowing on the Tweed River. Photo: Murwillumbah Rowing Club.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He would also value the fact that Murwillumbah Rowing Club members compete in regattas on the Clarence at Grafton each year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Murwillumbah Rowing Club on the Tweed, as it is today, was established in 1976.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is well after Edward&#8217;s lifetime, but his legacy lives on through his great-granddaughter commemorating his achievement, on the Tweed River.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Following the celebrations, the club will then prepare to host its 15th Head of the Tweed on 5 July \u2013 one of the region&#8217;s major rowing events.<\/p>\n<p>More than 200 competitors are expected to take part in the 21km event from Chinderah to Murwillumbah, rowing and paddling singles, doubles, quads, fours, eights, kayaks, dragon boats and surf skis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This event has grown from small beginnings in 2009 and developed, with the interruption of COVID and floods, into a major rowing event in the region,&#8221; Albury said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It attracts rowers, kayakers, and dragon boats from interstate, as well as local rowing clubs from the Gold Coast and further north.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For Albury, the river remains a special place to celebrate both the sport&#8217;s future and its past.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Tweed River is very special with watching the sunrise, hearing the birds sing, as it is generally an early morning activity,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>As rowers prepare to honour Trickett&#8217;s achievement 150 years on, his legacy continues to live not only in record books and museum exhibits, but on the waters of the Tweed itself.<\/p>\n<p>Register for Head of the Tweed at <a href=\"http:\/\/rowingmanager.com\/regattas\/7092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rowingmanager.com\/regattas\/7092<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN members of Murwillumbah Rowing Club take to the Tweed River on 27 June, they will commemorate 150 years since Edward Trickett became Australia&#8217;s first sporting world champion.
