An adventure conceived in freedom, expanse and aggression.<\/p>\n
A style to revolutionise the staid format of Test cricket\u2026 that ultimately fell at the disciplines and demands required in the longest, most testing discipline in professional sport.<\/p>\n
Bazball proved more of a social movement than a sporting strategy.<\/p>\n
Adopted with a cult-like fervour, it briefly invigorated a miserable people.<\/p>\n
Its protagonists and boosters preached its superiority and declared it the way, the truth and the light\u2026 all should follow or be left behind.<\/p>\n
But Bazball didn\u2019t win anything.<\/p>\n
Its victories were moral, not tangible.<\/p>\n
Removing consequence from professional sport was a thought bubble that exploded under the first sign of pressure.<\/p>\n
England\u2019s cricketers bailed out rather than dug in.<\/p>\n
They created positions of promise through outrageous enterprise and then squandered them through compulsion.<\/p>\n
Consolidation was boring\u2026 seemingly beneath them.<\/p>\n
When the self-delusion melts away, there were four series to judge the success of the program.<\/p>\n
At home, England failed to beat either Australia or India \u2013 both series were drawn 2-2, highlighted by moments of recklessness and foolishness.<\/p>\n
Away, they were thrashed 4-1\u2026 as inept as any previous generation to the challenges of the subcontinent and down under.<\/p>\n
Bazball won nothing\u2026 that is what should be chiselled on its gravestone.<\/p>\n
The flawed concept was one thing\u2026 the lack of discipline quite another.<\/p>\n
England tried to be a pub team on the professional circuit.<\/p>\n
It ended embarrassingly and woefully.<\/p>\n
First, the captain fell in a brazen display of self-aggrandisement\u2026 celebrated as a hero as the world burned behind him.<\/p>\n
And now the coach and architect has been sacked.<\/p>\n
A move that should have been made within 48 hours of the Ashes and the revelations of the Harry Brook cover-up.<\/p>\n
England was convinced Bazball was going to change the world.<\/p>\n
Today it joins history\u2019s lists of false prophecies and failed cults.<\/p>\n
It will be studied for generations to come as a cautionary tale.<\/p>\n
But it won\u2019t be missed.<\/p>\n
