Dr Grant is a musician, performance philosopher and academic who spent time working with remote communities and creative cultures in Portugal before returning to Byron Bay in 2023.

The pair have partnered with the Mosey On Inn Group – operators of acclaimed venues including The Eltham, Ciao, Mate! and You Beauty – along with companies including Flo Records, Main Arm Records and Mangrove Symposium, who share their vision for an event centred around community, culture, food and music. While the original plan was to host the opening and closing events at Bangalow Showground, that changed after the site flooded during last year’s Byron Writers Festival.

The opening celebration will now be held at the Northern Hotel Byron Bay, with the closing party taking place at the Beach Hotel Byron Bay.

The rest of the program will unfold throughout Bangalow at venues including Bangalow A&I Hall, Moller Pavilion and the Old Scout Hall in the Showground, nearby Bangalow RSL, You Beauty, Flo Records and The Lumber Yard.

On Sunday, Station Street will close for a community celebration featuring performances from community groups including Brazilian and African dance troupes, as well as the Northern Rivers Conservatorium’s Youth Orchestra.

“We want the event to be ubiquitous – you can’t avoid it when you come here,” Gould said.

Gould also called in a favour from Hiatus Kaiyote, who agreed to headline the festival at a reduced rate.

The lineup now features more than 30 artists, including London-based septet Kokoroko, known for their fusion of funk and highlife; rising First Nations Australian singer, songwriter and rapper Miss Kaninna; former The Cat Empire co-frontman Harry James Angus; and Mexican-born DJ Coco Maria.

Beyond live performances, the festival will include artist talks, performance art, workshops, deep listening sessions and sound installations, with both free and ticketed events designed to encourage broad community participation.

“We are making it up as we go along, but we want it to be culturally and community significant and embedded, and serve a function in the region,” Dr Grant said.

The festival was originally planned for August but organisers decided they needed more time to develop the program and partnerships.

They hope to return to that month for future editions.

DINGO Music & Arts Festival runs from 8–11 October.

For more information and tickets, visit dingofestival.com

IT was during last year’s Regional & Remote Music Summit in Byron Bay that the idea for an innovative new community festival in Bangalow was sparked.
