NINE accomplished artists from Geelong, Melbourne and regional Victoria will have their works showcased at Liminal Gallery in a coming exhibition.
All Things Animal: from the observed to the imagined explores the theme of the animal realm, featuring a mix of styles ranging from naturalistic to fantastical and surreal.
Co-curator and artist Jill Green said while all the artists have chosen different styles they are all linked through the theme of animals.
“It’s really amazing and exciting to see just how different, it’s such a broad theme, and how different we all are and how we’re interpreting that.”
Artists had their choice of mediums from drawing and painting through to printmaking, ceramics and more.
Green said the exhibition is a treasure trove of art, exploring how people connect with animals.
“I hope that people that come and view it, obviously there’s something enriching for the viewer that they see and that they’re connected and stimulated by something.
“I think there’s something for everybody, there’s something that will be quite thought provoking, some quite emotive pieces, there’s a lot of humour in the group.”

Keeping on the theme of connecting with animals, Green’s piece for the exhibition features her childhood friend’s dog, Dottie.
The piece is based on her friend when she was a little girl, but as her childhood dog, playing into the idea that pet owners morph into their animals.
“She now has a black labrador called Grover and he’s kind of this gorgeous, friendly, dippy giant, but is a real homebody and he very much reflects my best friend,” Green said.
“She sees my dog Chummy, who is just very extroverted, very loving, quite dynamic, is a real goofball, can be a bit of a blowfly with Grover and she says she’s exactly you as a kid.”
The exhibition will open on July 26, with the exhibiting artists and celebratory drinks, while a Meet the Artists event will be held on August 16.
