A YEAR on from taking over the reins at one of Torquay’s wine bars, owners Emma Aitken Alexander and Rob Aitken have rebranded.

Mr Archer Wine Bar is now known as Archers Torquay, redefining the brand, venue and offerings.

Ms Aitken Alexander said they felt like it was the right time for the rebranding after making a string of changes around the venue.

“It was the last piece of the puzzle to really make it ours.

“When we took over, it was such a regulars’ bar that we didn’t want to come in and change everything straight away, which is why we have gradually made these changes.

The food within the venue is seasonal and is prepared by the chef on the day.

“The last thing was the name, and we really believe we’re more than just the wine bar now, which is why we dropped that wine bar component.

“I’d like to be seen as your local neighbourhood wine bar that does exceptional wine but also does your live music, gin tastings and all the other stuff that happens.”

Along with the name change, in the past year Archers Torquay has also expanded its wine list, with a focus on supporting local producers across all offerings.

“We’ve grown the wine list to about 170 bottles and we’ve focused about 40 per cent of that being the Geelong surroundings.

“The rest of the wine list is focused on what Geelong does well, but in different regions, some more iconic regions around Australia as as well.”

Along with the name change, Archers Torquay has expanded its beer and wine offerings and introduced some more special events.

The introduction of Ayala, saw the food offerings grow, running out of a small kitchen in the venue.

The idea behind Ayala is to create a relaxed dining experience for customers, serving seasonal tapas dishes full of fresh ingredients.

“It’s been inspired by our travels to Spain where they’re working in a tiny kitchen but then putting out these amazing dishes that pair so well with wine and beers,” Ms Aitken Alexander said.

Archers Torquay also offers live music every Friday night with special events taking place throughout the year, including New Years Eve at Archers and a New Years Day recovery Barbecue.
