Winter has landed and Ambulance Victoria (AV) is urging people to look after their health, check in on the vulnerable and get vaccinated.

As the colder weather arrives so does the increase of seasonal illnesses the heightened risk of injury and sickness.

AV executive director operation Danielle North said winter brings additional health risks.

“Simple things like a fall in the bathroom or a faulty heater can quickly become serious,” she said.

“Now’s the time to check that your heating is safe, that rugs and cords aren’t trip hazards and that walkways are clear and well-lit.”

Victorians are also reminded that vaccinations are one of the most important ways to protect against illnesses.

Ms North encouraged Victorians to do their part and ensure paramedics and first responders are available for patients most in need.

“There are many options people can access when they need timely medical care and health advice but don’t need an emergency ambulance, including the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department and Urgent Care Clinics,” she said.

“We know demand on our hard-working paramedics and first responders will rise as we head into winter and we tend to see a surge in respiratory illnesses like flu and COVID-19.”

Proper and thorough handwashing is also important in helping to stop the spreading of germs, with people reminded to wash their hand regularly using soap and water.

Ms North urged people to keep regular check-ups with their GP or specialist and stay home if unwell.

For non-urgent health concerns, people can access the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department 24/7, Urgent Care Clinics, Nurse on Call and local GPs and pharmacists.
