Goodwin showcases Australia’s thriving music scene in new exhibition

Geelong music and arts photographer Lucinda Goodwin’s immersive exhibition Retrospect 001 is an exclusive look into Australia’s thriving music scene, showcasing imagery from more than a decade of shooting some of the world’s best artists.

Launching last month at Platform Arts Gallery in Geelong, Retrospect 001 presents a look inside Goodwin’s extensive artistic catalogue of 13 years, which included mixed media collage works and traditional film processes including 35mm, medium format and polaroid, and Music From The Burbs – a video series born during COVID which saw her record stripped-back versions of local artists’ songs in their homes.

 

The vivid collection of more than 200 images on show throughout the exhibition includes artists such as Rob Thomas, The Offspring, Katy Perry, Gang of Youths and Boy & Bear, who Goodwin were captured at events such as Falls Festival, Bluesfest, Splendour in the Grass, Queenscliff Music Festival, and the ARIA Awards.

With a sense of community as her consistent theme in her work, Goodwin said it was very exciting to finally showcase her huge collection to the Geelong community.

 

“The opening night was a fantastic chance to celebrate the local music industry and it was amazing to have a lot of fellow photographers, musicians, venue owners and supporters of local live music all pop down to check out the space.

“The Geelong music community has been very important for my career over the years… it was really overwhelming to see that sentiment translate physically over the course of the night, it was a good chance for people within the community to catch up after the last few years.

“It was a bit of a surreal moment once the show was finally installed to be standing among your entire careers worth of work.”

To complement Ms Goodwin’s opening night exhibition, Aireys Inlet musician Seb Szabo and Geelong artist Connor Morel provided live musc.

“Given that digital has taken over our lives, I very rarely see my work in print, let alone walls and walls full of it,” Goodwin said.

“I [was] a little lost for words to try to sum up what a magical evening the launch event was.”

 

A closing celebration for Retrospect 001 will be held in Gallery Two at Platform Arts on Wednesday, May 17.

Platform Arts Gallery is open from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

The exhibition will officially close on May 19.
