A NEW stage work exploring the intensity of modern fandom and the blurred lines between public figures and their private lives will premiere in Geelong next weekend.

I Am in a Parasocial Relationship with Britney Spears, created by Back to Back Theatre ensemble member Simon Laherty, examines the intersection of fantasy, identity and obsession through the lens of celebrity culture.

The production draws on Laherty’s self-described status as Britney Spears’s number one fan and unpacks the emotional intensity of one-sided connections formed with public figures.

Parasocial relationships, where audiences form deep personal bonds with people they may never meet, have become increasingly visible in online culture.

Spears’s own highly publicised life – from her 2007 breakdown to the global #FreeBritney movement – provides a backdrop for the work’s themes.

Laherty said the idea for the show began several years ago and was driven by a desire to imagine a different reality for Spears beyond the scrutiny of fame.

“It’s about me wanting to be with Britney to get rid of all of the publicity and all of the negativity from her life and the conservatorship,” he said.

The performance begins with a sting. A covert operation is launched, led by undercover operatives who blur the line between reality and invention.

Laherty, who devises an elaborate plan to protect his celebrity crush from unseen threats, is at the centre of the imaginative scheme.

The show blends elements of a surveillance thriller, personal confession and love letter, using humour and drama to explore obsession, loyalty and the stories people create around those they admire.

The work has been co-created with writer-performer Luke Ryan, alongside Back to Back Theatre artistic director Bruce Gladwin and dramaturg Kate Sulan.

“It’s an active, rich fantasy about a reality where Simon and Britney can be together in one place,” Gladwin said.

“Simon has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Britney Spears – he’s read her recent biography four or five times.”

Back to Back Theatre is widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading contemporary theatre companies, with a strong international reputation for its original, ensemble-driven work.

Its productions have been honoured with some of the most prestigious awards in Australian and international theatre.

I Am in a Parasocial Relationship with Britney Spears will debut at Geelong Arts Centre on 8–9 May.

Geelong Arts Centre chief executive and artistic director Rhys Holden said it was a privilege to present the world premiere in Geelong.

“Back to Back Theatre is one of Australia’s most acclaimed theatre companies,” he said.

“As our next-door neighbours in the cultural precinct, their work is deeply embedded in the creative life of our region, making this collaboration with Geelong Arts Centre even more meaningful.”
