Lorne Sculpture Biennale

March 4, 2022 BY

Lorne's foreshore will turn into an outdoor sculpture exhibition this month. Pictured is Brigit Heller's Paradiso perduto from the 2017-18 festival.

Speaking directly to the multiple histories of Lorne, the Lorne Sculpture Biennale will explore the deep connections to nature, history and community through sculpture, performance and conversations under 2022’s theme Spirit of Place.

Held on traditional Gadubanud land, the works will explore the deeper histories of Lorne by taking a deep dive into Lorne’s diverse and fascinating past. The theme is timeless.

In addition to the sculpture trail, the Sculpture Plus program features themed discussions, artist talks, projections in the main street and on the beach, workshops that forage and create, themed history discussions with the Lorne Historical Society, Instameets to capture the best images for Instagram, even Monday night music events at the Lorne Bowls Club with poets, players and storytellers to keep the weekend vibes happening.

Head to www.lornesculpture.com/calendar for the full Sculpture Plus program and to book tickets if necessary.

And it doesn’t end there. SculptureSCAPE is an event taking place over two weekends when ephemeral and temporary artworks are installed and exhibited for one weekend only. Blink and you might miss it – therein lies its charm and appeal.

The Small Sculpture Prize and Exhibition features small works by Biennale and other invited artists, giving art lovers, supporters and visitors the opportunity to take a small piece of the Biennale home.

And, in a first for the event, LSB has established an online gallery shop – www.shop.lornesculpture.com – to showcase the exhibited sculptural works, as well as limited edition and original works on paper, ceramics and design objects – making collecting just a click away.

In other good news, all commissions generated by the sales will be reinvested into future Biennales.

There is so much to do in and around Lorne over the course of the Biennale that it would be a shame to miss it.

Situated along the Great Ocean Road, west from Melbourne, the long-awaited Lorne Sculpture Biennale cements its place on the global stage as a comprehensive, respected and full program, celebrating sculpture in all its many forms.

“After a few false starts, we are delighted to be welcoming the Lorne Sculpture Biennale back to our iconic town,” artistic director Graeme Wilkie OAM said.

“The depth of offering with the supporting Sculpture Plus program, SculptureSCAPE and Small Sculpture Prize and Exhibition, makes this year’s Biennale a full and enriching cultural experience.

“We look forward to welcoming all art and cultural lovers back to Lorne to experience its joy.”

The Lorne Sculpture Biennale is a free and un-ticketed event. It will be in situ from Saturday, March 12 until Sunday, April 3. For more information head to: www.lornesculpture.com and follow LSB on Instagram @lornesculpture.
