Sights set on Surf Coast Century
THE 13th edition of the Surf Coast Century 100km ultra trail marathon is returning to Anglesea on September 21.
The event offers a range of distances for participants to choose from, including the 100-kilometre individual or relay and a 50km revamped run.
The 2024 event has also been appointed as the Australian Ultra Runners Association (AURA) Long Course Trail National Championships.
Several Surf Coast and Geelong residents will join competitors as they take on the trail, including Highton’s Tim Buckley.
Mr Buckley will take on the 50-kilometre run, participating in his first ultramarathon, as part of the event, he’s raising money for Heads Together for ABI.
His motivation comes from a brain injury he sustained after a mountain biking accident six years ago.
“I did not want to let my brain injury define me; it’s what propelled me on this journey,” Mr Buckley said.
“The Century is allowing me to push my boundaries even further; with my story to highlight the significance of embracing change, resilience, and inspiring others to pursue their aspirations despite adversity.”
Jan Juc’s Nick Hall is participating in the 100km race while his wife Cathy hits the trails in the 50km.
“The century is both a great challenge and beautiful experience for us, and we’re looking forward to competing and enjoying the event together,” Nick said.
“You get to explore the less common paths as part of the course especially in the hinterland behind Anglesea.”
Those competing in the 100km race will complete a figure eight course from Anglesea to Torquay along the beach, returning along the cliff top tracks and hinterland trails to Moggs Creek and Aireys Inlet; heading back to Anglesea on the Surf Coast Walk trail.
Participants in the 50km event will complete the first half of the 100km course.
Torquay-based event organisers Rapid Ascent’s general manager Sam Maffett is encouraging locals to get involved and have a go.
“The Century offers so much more than just an achievable and varied course – it takes competitors on a spectacular journey with stunning views matched with a welcoming atmosphere and friendly camaraderie throughout,” he said.
