Take a new look at Animal Farm

An exciting rework of George Orwell’s Animal Farm will be put under bright lights at the Potato Shed in Drysdale next week.

The Bellarine venue will play host to three performances of the political parable by award-winning performance troupe Bloomshed on Tuesday, August 22 and Wednesday, August 23.

The 60-minute performances will see Orwell’s novel reinvented to reference an era of climate change, exploitation and corruption.

Originally published in 1945, Animal Farm tells the tale of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where animals can be equal, free and happy.

The retold story will feature a high-octane mix of dance breaks and physical comedy.

 

City of Greater Geelong Bellarine Ward councillor Jim Mason said the modern adaptation of the well-known play would be one not to miss.

“I expect many people will remember this book as a staple of their secondary school English studies.

“The story caused quite a stir back in its day and will be interesting to see how Bloomshed has reworked the story to engage with a modern audience.

“I’m pleased the Potato Shed can once again host a performance that is both entertaining and also provokes thought.”

Geelong locals are also set to see a familiar face on stage, with Drysdale raised actor James Malcher playing a major role in the production.

Malcher said the opportunity to be a part of a show in his hometown was exciting at both a personal and professional level.

“As a local it’s going to be exciting to have the opportunity to perform at the Potato Shed for the very first time.

“This is a performance that hits on a lot of different themes and is quite challenging; we’re really pumped to be able to bring this show to regional audiences.

“We’re especially excited about introducing some comedy into the performance and making it relevant to the Australian political climate of today.”
